Indian Rail is the fourth largest railway network in the world, the other three being those in the USA, Russia and China. It is also the fourth largest employer, the number of employees being 1.4 million.
There are 17 railway zones in Indian Railways and each zone is further split into divisions with headquarters at each division. Each zone is headed by a General Manager, who is directly under the railway board and under him are the various divisional officers. At the end comes the station master, who has the individual station under his control.
About 30 million people travel daily, and there are some who travel on weekly or monthly basis. During vacation times and festival seasons there is a huge rush in the trains. For frequent travelers, season tickets are available, which offer discounts on their tickets. Senior citizens and students on educational tour get concession when they book tickets. Then, Group bookings also get you discounts and other offers.
If you need to travel at a very short notice due to some emergency, you have the option to book your tickets under the Tatkal scheme. The Tatkal booking is possible only one day prior to the journey and the counters open for Tatkal booking at 10 in the morning. When you book Tatkal tickets online, you need not submit any valid ID proof, but you have to carry one when you travel in the train. A maximum of 4 persons can be booked under this scheme in the same PNR number. This scheme has been introduced in Indian Rail only recently.
